Bread of Life

A thank you for the teachers of our children at church.

A warm loaf of homemade bread, a bookmark and matching label.

Label reads: “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” -John 6:35  Thank you for helping feed our child! Love the Pipes”

Bookmark: “Come unto me…  eat and drink of the bread and the waters of life freely;”
– Alma 5:35

The labels were quickly changed to make neighbor (and home teaching/visiting teaching) gifts for Christmastime.

And here it is all wrapped up and ready to gift:

Mmmm.  And a nice change of pace from all the sweets of the season.  Not that I mind those either.  😉

A little decor…

The plan is to switch these out each year as those adorable mugs change.

Two done so far.  The photos for all are taken.  I just haven’t sat down long enough to finish up the photoshopping part of it.  The tutorial is so easy and fun to boot.  I think there might be some silhouette valentines in the near future.  😉

Who can resist such kissable profiles?

Not me.

happy holiday

{Jacob’s email to the family last Sunday.}
ho,ho,ho! Oh, ! How are all your holidays going? Thanksgiving was a blast! We had a great time. I can’t wait for Christmas.
I just love this time of year because of: (1) Halloween!(2) Thanksgiving!(3) Christmas!(4) New year’s! I wish you a merry Christmas!
Love,
Jacob

P.S.-Here are some pictures of the Salt Lake Temple.

{Jacob forwarded some photos he sent to himself from a kiosk at Temple Square.  Me thinks this boy likes having an email address.  😉  I’m not sure of the copyright on the photos so I didn’t include them.  I will post a few we took the last time we were on Temple Square – November 28th.  The same evening he sent the photos to himself from the Visitors Center.  🙂 }  Sadly, I cannot find my SD card anywhere.  My lovely full one with photos from our trip – including the fun comics.  I will continue to search the couch cushions and toy boxes.  I know I had it at one point…  my apologies.

Comically thankful

I placed these comic papers around the tables for Thanksgiving. While the younger crowd dished up their food the older ones drew comics. Then while the adults finished eating, the younger ones that wanted drew a comic as well. Funny, thoughtful, downright silly – all were great fun! …and all made it to the fridge. 😉

*This is a place holder for all the comics I need to find on my SD card and put here – they are amazing.  The anticipation will only make “Bob the Turtle” and “Smiley Man” that much more exciting.  Coming Soon.  I promise.  *POW* *

Day 20

Just slightly overdue.  😉

We spent Day 20 in the car traveling to our Thanksgiving destination – Aunt Ruth-a’s house.  We were planning on going the day before but a blizzard warning {first time in my lifetime here} prevented that.  We were happy to be warm and snug and traveling instead of on the side of a slippery road.  A day later than planned, a little slower than planned, but we made it.  Hooray!  🙂  My creative endeavor for the day involved felt and a glue gun.  Yup, in the car.  I might even be impressed with myself.  😉  It is amazing what an inverter can allow you to accomplish.

I love making place cards.  For Thanksgiving especially.  It’s been my “job” for years.  Last year we made cornucopias out of sugar cones, jelly beans and Runts.  Hard to top, no?  I think we did okay:

I love taking parts of one holiday and infusing it into another. Thus the “fortunate cookies” were born. The felt fortune cookies served as place holders for the dinner table. Mint kisses were hidden inside and a whole bunch of printed tags, labels and journaling tags were scattered around. I invited people to write fortunes for each other.  We got some funny fortunes from some of the smaller ones and lots of giggles.  Later I thought it would be way better to write “fortunate” things about each other and place them in the corresponding cookies. Ah, there’s always next year.  😉

What fun – and so easy to do for a crowd!   The fortune cookies are felt circles.  Each one has a piece of floral wire hot glued across the diameter with a ribbon over to keep it purty.  I’ll have to take a close-up photo of that – it’s a little hard to explain.  That way the wire can be bent and the cookie keeps it’s shape (thank you Martha Stewart).  Adorable and reusable.  And obviously portable seeing as I made them in the car. 50 of them, just-in-case.  We ended up using close to 40.

*Huge special thank you to my brother John.  He sacrificed some computer time to help me cut all those tags and cards.  I’m thankful for him!*

Beauty.

We are creating LOTS of fun memories with the cousins in our home.  LOVE having them here for a 2 day visit!  When we lived in the same town they rarely had sleepovers.  What a treat tonight.  I think they are *now* all asleep.  😉

And for thought:  “Everyone can create. You don’t need money, position, or influence in order to create something of substance or beauty.” – President Uchtdorf

Happy Day!

Did you?

Many thanks to all the men and women in the past who made it possible for me to vote today.  I am thankful for the chance to choose to vote.  Right behind me in line was one of my friends that got to vote for her first time today.  Her excitement was contagious.

p.s.  I love this series of photos taken today.  Want to vote on your favorite?  😉

Festive Dinner

There are not enough meal times on Halloween to celebrate all the yummy food for the occasion.  What’s a mommy to do?  Celebrate the weekend before too, of course.  🙂

Especially when you have such cute place cards, napkin rings and and candy wrappers to try out.

These all come from the Costumed Posie Dolls Halloween Printables by Kitschy Digitals.  They were originally designed as treat toppers and candy wrappers, but are oh-so-versatile.  They are found at Jessica Sprague’s digital scrapbooking site, new in the store today.  Fun!  They came ready to add photos to and print.  Easy to use and oh-so-adorable.  I also used the Washi Tape Frames for typing the names on the cards.  I love Danielle’s designs.  They have a fun, retro feel that I just adore.  Which leads to an exciting announcement.  This is my first project being on the creative team for Jessica Sprague’s site.  Sweet!  There are many talented designers, lots of yummy designs, wonderful classes to take, and lots to learn.  I am with a wonderful group of ladies and feeling so blessed.

The dinner was fun to make too.  The smashed boo-tatoes idea came from Martha Stewart’s site.  We used the potatoes from our garden (about half of our harvest) and made a big pot.  The recipe is all mine and so easy.  Boil the potatoes with the skins on for 35-40 minutes.  Drain the water.  Splush in half&half, whole milk, 2% – whatever you have on hand.  Cream cheese or sour cream is also yummy.  I like adding Real Salt, butter and fresh garlic to the pot.  Then I take the hand mixer and whip it all up, right in the pot.  I add milk and continue whipping until it’s the right consistency.  Done.  Well – except this time I put it into a Ziploc bag, snipped the edge and squeezed out ghost-like potatoes.  Which is kinda-sorta similar to the pastry bag directions on Martha’s site.  😉

I didn’t want to color sesame seeds black though so I just used cilantro for the eyes.  The sweet potato pumpkins were yummy too!  There was no recipe, so I peeled and then boiled them.  I also used half-n-half and butter, but this time I sweetened it up.  A little brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.  They tasted just like pumpkin pie.  Yum!  Cilantro leaves and stems and the pumpkins were complete.  I added green beans from our garden and hot-n-spicy chicken from the store.  It was a hit at my house.

And a big thank you to JB for holding the leaves nearby for just the right photo.

Meals for a crazy fall day

Lunch today:

Taco popcorn and Hot Chocolate with whipped cream

Because it’s one of those crazy running around kind of fall days.

On the menu for dinner?  Broccoli Cheddar Soup in bread bowls.  I wish it was this recipe for the soup – yummy!  and not too hard, just takes time.  But it is one of those crazy running around kind of days.  I wish the bread bowls were made with the recipe from the lady that owns this store in town.  Amazing!  I still need to get that recipe.  They are delicious.  Instead, we have this:

But I tell you – those rolls are yummy and are the perfect size for little ones eating “bread bowls”.

Happy Fall!  and Happy crazy days!

Solemnized with parade, games, sports, bells and illuminations.

I *adore* Manti’s 4th of July celebrations.  I love the town I grew up in too (Shoshone, Idaho).  The celebrations there were great fun as well.  There was the ever-fabulous cake and ice cream social – yum! as well as the baseball game with the North side of town vs. the South side.  Gotta love small towns split down the middle by railroad tracks.  Fireworks always capped off the evening of celebrating.  I remember “oohing” and “awwwing” (quite vocally I might add 😉 ) as each colorful illumination filled the sky.  Or sorta filled.  My siblings and I still laughingly remember the year the city council passed out rainbowy 3-D glasses to help with the over-all effect.  Ah, good times.

What I love about Manti is that we don’t wait until the evening of the fourth to celebrate.  No sir-ee.  We start the evening before with a parade.  And then don’t stop until late the next day.  Love that!

The parade is always full of American and city pride.  Our sweet niece Summer was in the Miss Independence Royalty as Miss Liberty  (the equivalent of Miss Congeniality).

Summer is the adorable blondie that's waving. 🙂

I absolutely adored the blackboard painted truck from “Candies on Main”.

So sweet! - Just think of all the renting out possibilities! 😉

Plenty of candy and plenty of fun.

parade booty - "Is that a tootsie roll?!??!?"

We had a fun evening at the park celebrating a cousin’s 4th birthday (complete with fireworks!) and then the kiddos settled into the treehouse to sleep out. A new tradition – 2 years running.  This year Jim Bob ran Christmas lights around the trunk for little ones needing to make their way into the house for the restroom.  It was neat to see it all lit.  We are already planning Christmas decor and lighting now.  Jim Bob and his siblings used to sleep outside at their Grandma’s house on the 3rd and would wake up to the bell ringing at the American Legion Hall up the street.  Bell ringing can be done by anyone in the community and is from 6-7 a.m.  We haven’t made it the past few years.  😉  We will again though.

The next morning we made flouffy hair clips and played with cousins while their mom ran the 5K (Grandma did too!).  Then it was breakfast at Grandma’s and speeches at the city park.

The first speech was by Don Tibbs (a judge for many years.  He is also a founding member and a president of the Manti Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) ).  His speech included how the 4th of July celebration in Manti started as well as some words from our Founding Fathers.  He showed a copy of the Declaration of Independence:

and quoted a letter that John Adams wrote to his wife:

“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.  You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.”

You can see the actual letter here at the Massachussetts Historical Society website.  Beauty.

The Miss Independence royalty then gave their speeches.  The theme was “Wake Up America” and they all did a lovely job.  Mikala Lindhardt was Miss Independence this year and did a beautiful job.  She is our neighbor half a block over and such a sweetheart.  Here’s part of her speech.

Independence Day Speech-Small (click link to see video)

I cut off the end *sadly*.  She said (paraphrasing, but really close) “Let us all stop rolling over and hitting the snooze button – Wake Up America!”

That was the beginning of the old school celebration.  Foot races (and prizes), local entertainment (lots of great vocals, “Come Sail Away” on the violin, a Michael Jackson impersonator and clogging – does it get any more American??), a dunk booth (with the Stake President taking a turn),  money-in-the-hay, egg toss, greased pole climb, tug-of-war with the dividing line being the water from the fire hose, and all-you-can-eat watermelon.  Whew!  Par-tay!

...and not-so-willing ones as well (Jim Bob, Liz, John).

Roar, GRRR, yum

"silly Katey and mommy melon"

Our favorite entertainment this year was when the kiddos got up at the end and did their own thing.  I didn’t realize we had so many performers in our family.  A break-dancing cousin and a high stepping Katey Belle – pretty cute.

bustin' a move

After the park we stopped at Fred’s for dip cones.  Yes, these are the small size.  😉  The girls went for chocolate . . .

and it seems as if all the boys prefer butterscotch.

It was our first Fourth to eat those, but everyone voted to make it an annual tradition.  🙂

The day was finished off with an impromptu pot-luck bbq at Grandma’s, homemade ice cream, and fireworks with the temple in the background.  Perfect.  From bells to illuminations – we’ve got it all.

Happy Fourth!
